SAFE works WITH people, not for them. We don’t assume we know everything about the health problems impacting a community. We don’t automatically assume we know what the solutions should be. Although we know and bring our knowledge of what has worked elsewhere, we first emphasize listening and discussing. We work together. We partner with communities to understand, solve, and improve health in sustainable ways that actually work for that community.
Our process includes a constructive dialog with our partner communities and health facilities. It allows enough flexibility to ensure that our work is driven and owned by partner communities, but that it is still evidence-based. We study what works. We acknowledge it when something doesn't work, and we change our tactics. We believe in evidence!
If a woman makes the decision to get help, but can't reach the health facility; if she reaches the facility but there's no supplies; or if there are supplies but there are not trained health workers, health and survival won't change. Progress in one problem area won't make any difference to maternal, newborn, or child survival unless all the other areas are also addressed. SAFE targets all Three Delays so that women, babies, children, and families can lead healthy, empowered lives.
